VITAMIN ANGELS: CHAMPIONS FOR NUTRITION
In many communities around the world, access to nutritious foods and basic health services is limited. For this reason, Vitamin Angels focuses on serving children and mothers in need, particularly those living in areas classified by the World Health Organization as experiencing moderate to severe Vitamin A deficiency.
Vitamin Angels provides nutritional support throughout, and beyond, the most critical window of a child’s development. They achieve this by providing prenatal vitamins and breastfeeding education resources to pregnant and breastfeeding mothers, and vitamin A and deworming treatment to children under the age of five.
IRREVERSIBLE EFFECTS OF MALNUTRITION
The first 1,000 days of life, from conception until age two, is the most critical developmental window in a person’s entire life. When children are malnourished, especially during that period of time in their lives, it is much more difficult for them to thrive later on. They often have persistent health problems, preventing them from doing the things that kids love most – like playing or going to school. Permanent consequences, like stunting, serve as a visible reminder of poor growth and cognitive development in children who are malnourished. And for too many, a lack of essential nutrients leads to early and preventable death.
LACK OF NUTRIENTS
In countries across the globe, children live on staple foods like rice and corn almost exclusively. These foods are filling and affordable but lack essential nutrients. Even in the U.S., low-income meals are often heavy in starch, fat and sugar, and lacking critical vitamins. When children are consuming enough calories to survive but are not getting the nutrients they need, they suffer from malnutrition, or more specifically, undernutrition. Even when they’re not starving, the health risks of poor nutrition are a dangerous health risk to young children everywhere. That’s why Vitamin Angels focuses on reaching pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, and children under five who are at risk of malnutrition and do not have regular access to health services.
