As an occupational therapist, helping people overcome challenges is my job. As an amputee (as of October 2014), overcoming challenges is my life! And helping others to overcome challenges and obstacles as both an OT and an amputee has really become my story. I love challenging and motivating others to be the awesome, rock star selves we can all be when we get the right people and support in our corners!
Currently, I’m training for my first paratriathlon, and I can’t wait to see where that takes me. I’ve always enjoyed running and swimming, so I decided to give triathlon a try and have ended up loving it! I absolutely love being in the outdoors (hiking, camping, etc), yoga, and functional fitness/lifting as well, and I’m usually up to give anything a try.
I have a harder time than most regulating my body temperature and sweating so much due to wearing carbon fiber and silicone on an entire extremity, so hydration is almost always an issue for me. There’s rarely a time you’ll see me without my water bottle! Ultima provides me with what I need to be able to stay hydrated and regulate my body temperature without ingesting dyes or extra sugars, and I’m forever thankful for them!
I’ve also been offered with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to go to Nepal this September to help make the tourist areas more accessible and disability-friendly! This will mean more revenue for Nepal, which will help them rebuild after the April 2015 earthquake, which left behind many people who have been permanently disabled by amputation, spinal cord injuries, head trauma, etc. I’ll be working with Operation Namaste to initially assist in creating more accessible areas to be used by tourists as well as their own population, and then we will go over as health care practitioners (occupational & physical therapists, prosthetists, emergency nurses, etc) to provide rehabilitation and better functioning prostheses and durable medical equipment to the people there. I do have to find funding for this trip, so if you want to head over to my Crowdrise and donate, that would mean the world to me! Please also send me your address if you do so that I can send you some thank you hugs through the mail!
