Catching Up With Sarah
Earlier this summer, we were lucky enough to catch up with our Ambassador Sarah Pease, on her way home to Texas from Ireland. She spent the summer running and training in Europe, having the time of her life! While in Sweden, Sarah even achieved a new PR! Check out our Q & A below to learn more about Sarah.
What are your favorite and least favorite parts of running?
My favorite parts of running are racing and exploring new cities. There’s nothing quite like lining up for a race knowing you are going to push your body to the max and have a chance to run faster than you’ve ever run before. Running is also the best way to see a new city. I saw so much while I was racing in Europe because I did a lot of running in really cool places.
How did you begin running and how long have you been professionally competing?
I started running track in 7th grade and cross country in 8th grade. I wanted to be a sprinter and had no intention of running long distances, but I was pretty good at the mile the first time I ran it and it kind of stuck. I’ve been a professional since fall of 2011. I graduated from Indiana University that spring and started training for the 2012 Olympic Trials.
How do you prepare for a race?
I try to prepare for a race the same way I do any workout or normal week so that I don’t have to do anything special. I may run a little bit less race week or my hard workout earlier in the week may not be as intense, but I’ve tried to stop having a strict routine and go with the flow. I try to be ready for anything that’s thrown my way so I can have a good performance regardless of the circumstances.
How did you choose your event?
Currently my main event is the 3,000m steeplechase. I ran the 100m and 300m hurdles in high school along with the 1600 and 3200. When I got to college, my coach wanted me to try the steeplechase. It’s a fun combination of distance running and hurdling.
What are the most common mistakes made by inexperienced runners?
I think it’s being intimidated by running. I’ve heard a lot of beginners say they can’t imagine doing this or that, but anyone can run. Anyone can get the best out of themselves. It’s really cool to see a new runner set a goal and accomplish something they didn’t think they would be able to do.
What are your goals in the next few years?
I want to run as fast as I can, while enjoying what I get to do! My main focus is the 2016 Olympic trials and taking my best shot at making a US team. Beyond that, I plan to train for and race a marathon!
