The Best Low-Carb Ketoade Recipe

If you’ve ever been on keto, you know there is a lot to get used to at first. Cutting out sugars and carbs isn’t exactly easy, and those first few weeks can be really tough. And don’t even get us started on the keto-flu (an unofficial term to describe feelings of nausea, headaches, dizziness, and lethargy, likely caused by the loss of electrolytes). For an easier transition to low-carb living, try finding delicious recipes to help satisfy any cravings you may have (and bonus points for finding recipes that help replenish your electrolytes as well). When looking online for electrolyte-rich drinks, you most likely are going to find a ton of “ketoade” recipe ideas. If you’re new to keto, you might be asking yourself, WTH is a ketoade? LOL, but no worries…it’s simply a sugar-free, zero-carb alternative to replenishing your electrolytes (think Powerade, Gatorade…and now ketoade 😉).

The best thing about ketoade is that there are sooo many options and recipes out there, so it’s fairly easy to find one that works for you. But in case you need a little inspo from the electrolyte gurus, we’ve got you covered. Today we are sharing the best and yummiest ketoade recipes!

Why You Need Electrolytes on Keto

So first and foremost, let’s get into why electrolyte replenishment is absolutely essential during keto. So without getting too sciency, an electrolyte deficiency is basically caused by the fact that your body is losing more fluids than usual. But you’re only cutting out carbs, so how does this affect your electrolyte and nutrient levels? Well, as you may know, the most common cause of electrolyte deficiency is dehydration. But if you're doing keto or a low carb diet, you've probably already figured out that drinking water isn't enough to keep you hydrated. That's because when we're in a state of ketosis–especially during those first few weeks–our bodies tend to be less efficient at retaining water, so it's important to make sure we're getting enough electrolytes and fluids.

As you continue to limit and reduce the number of carbs you eat, your body actually taps into glycogen stores (which are stored with excess water), causing your kidneys to actually flush out more electrolytes.

What’s In A Ketoade?

When making your ketoade, you can get creative when it comes to flavors, but there are some key things you need in there in order to address an electrolyte imbalance. Here is a list of essential electrolytes that should be in your ketoade:

  • Sodium
  • Potassium
  • Magnesium
  • Calcium

If you are making your ketoade from scratch, some people will add lemons, Himalayan salt, apple cider vinegar, and zero-calorie sweeteners such as erythritol or monk fruit. But keep in mind with DIY ketoade, the flavor isn’t always…umm…the most appealing? TBH, it can be hard to sip on an entire glass of DIY ketoade. In the next section, we will share some delicious alternatives that are just as effective in replenishing lost electrolytes.
